Watch: INDIA Bloc Passes CEC Gyanesh Kumar Impeachment Motion; BJP Hits Back Over 'Mock Parliament'
INDIA bloc leaders conducted an unprecedented public impeachment-style proceeding against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's residence. The opposition levelled serious allegations against the CEC, including conspiring to steal elections, deleting 13.2 crore voter names during the Special Intensive Revision process, amending Form 6 without parliamentary approval, and acting at the behest of the ruling dispensation. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi called for Gyanesh Kumar to be tried for treason, arguing that illegal deletions cast doubt on the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Speaking on India Today, Congress leader Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi defended the mock parliament, citing the denial of parliamentary discussion and alleging significant omissions in the Election Commission's response. The Bharatiya Janata Party hit back, calling the proceedings a 'parliament of theatrics' and accusing the opposition of undermining constitutional institutions. Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury asserted the protest reflected public outrage over disenfranchisement, affirming that opposition leaders intend to escalate the issue.
