Anthony Lee, the Conservatives former director of campaigning, and his wife Laura have been spared jail over the election betting scandal. Lee pleaded guilty to two offences of cheating at gambling on the date of the 2024 general election after using inside information from a private meeting called by then Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The court heard the Lees placed more than two thousand pounds in bets from March to May 2024 and stood to win more than twenty three thousand pounds. A third person, Amy Hind, was also sentenced. Judge Tony Baumgartner warned their conduct risked undermining the Conservative Party as an institution and, more significantly, trust in the democratic process. The trio were charged by the Gambling Commission; other defendants will face trial next year and in 2028, and former MP Craig Williams pleaded guilty in June and will be sentenced at a later date.
