The States That Could Make Rahul Gandhi PM in 2029

Whether Rahul Gandhi becomes Prime Minister in 2029 or Narendra Modi returns to power may become clearer as early as 2027. This is because three key states will hold Assembly (MLA) elections in the coming years, and together these states account for 121 Lok Sabha seats.

First: Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of Lok Sabha seats in the country, with 80 seats.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won only 33 seats here, while the Samajwadi Party (SP) won 37 and the Congress won 6. Together, the SP-Congress alliance secured 43 seats.

If the BJP retains power in Uttar Pradesh in the 2027 Assembly elections, it could once again win around 50 Lok Sabha seats in 2029. However, if the SP-Congress alliance defeats the BJP in the Assembly elections, these 80 seats could become Rahul Gandhi’s biggest weapon in the 2029 general election.

Second: Karnataka

Karnataka has 28 Lok Sabha seats.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Congress won 9 seats, while the BJP won 17 and the JD(S) won 2, giving the NDA a total of 19 seats.

If Congress manages to retain the state government in the 2028 Assembly elections and increases its Lok Sabha tally to around 15–18 seats in 2029, it could gain a significant advantage from southern India.

Third: Punjab

Punjab has 13 Lok Sabha seats, and the state government is currently led by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

However, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Congress won 7 seats, while AAP managed to win only 3.

Although Raghav Chadha has joined the BJP, the party’s hold in Punjab is still not particularly strong. Therefore, Punjab could also play an important role in shaping the outcome of the 2029 general election.
