The Kushwaha (Koiri) community is one of the most influential OBC groups in both Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, second only to Yadavs in terms of population and political impact. Known by different surnames like Maurya, Shakya, Saini, and Kushwaha across regions, this community plays a crucial role in North Indian politics.
After 2014, a major shift was seen as Kushwaha voters moved from BSP towards BJP. The rise of Keshav Prasad Maurya as BJP’s state president in 2016 further strengthened BJP’s hold over this community. However, recent developments have changed the equation.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Akhilesh Yadav and the Samajwadi Party made significant inroads into the Kushwaha vote bank, winning multiple seats, while BJP lost key leaders from this community.
