Hema Malini is one of the most iconic actresses of India and is popularly known as the "dream girl". She is one of the veteran actresses of Bollywood and was widely known as the fashion trendsetter of Hindi cinema. She is also a trained Bharatanatyam dancer. In 2000, Malini was conferred with the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour. From 2003 to 2009, she served as an MP to the upper house – the Rajya Sabha, having been nominated by the then president of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. In February 2004, she officially joined the BJP. In 2016, Malini was caught up in a controversy after she was allotted a plot of land at a highly discounted price.
