BERLIN - Germany holds an early general election after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-way coalition collapsed in late 2024 over a budget dispute.
Polls open in Germany’s federal election. Over 59 million voters are eligible to vote, about 2.3m of them for the first time. Four candidates are bidding to be Germany’s next leader. The would-be chancellors are the incumbent Olaf Scholz of the Social Democratic Party, opposition leader Friedrich Merz of the conservative Christian Democratic Union, the current vice chancellor Robert Habeck of the Greens and, for the first time, a leader of a far-right party, Alice Weidel of the Alternative for Germany party.
Germans are voting in parliamentary elections brought forward by the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz' ruling coalition last November. The conservative CDU/CSU is in the lead in opinion polls.
Vote-counting will begin immediately after voting ends, and the general picture of the outcome should be clear very quickly thanks to exit polls. A final official result is expected early Monday.
Four candidates are running to be Germany’s next leader: incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz, of the center-left Social Democrats; Friedrich Merz of the mainstream conservative Christian Democratic Union party; current Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck, of the environmentalist Greens; and Alice Weidel, of the far-right, anti-immigration Alternative for Germany, or AfD.
