The political climate in India is heating up as the 2024 Lok Sabha elections approach. The stakes are high, and with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in power, several opposition parties are trying to form an alliance to pose a tough challenge to the BJP.

In a push for opposition unity, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has planned to meet his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday. The meetings are significant as they come amid rising speculation about the possibility of a grand opposition alliance ahead of the 2024 elections.

Kumar’s meetings with Banerjee and Yadav are expected to focus on building a united opposition front that can challenge the BJP. Both Banerjee and Yadav have been vocal critics of the BJP and have led their respective parties to victories in state elections. Their meetings with Kumar are seen as an attempt to forge a broader opposition alliance ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

The move to form an opposition alliance is not new. The BJP faced a united opposition front in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, but the coalition failed to make a significant impact as the BJP secured a comfortable majority. However, with the BJP facing criticism over its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and its controversial farm laws, the opposition sees an opportunity to make gains in the 2024 polls.

The meetings between Kumar, Banerjee, and Yadav are crucial as they represent three key opposition leaders who have considerable support bases in their respective states. While Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) party is a minor player in national politics, his influence in Bihar cannot be ignored. Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) party, on the other hand, has emerged as the main opposition force in West Bengal, defeating the BJP in the state assembly elections earlier this year. Similarly, Yadav’s Samajwadi Party has a significant presence in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state.

The success of the opposition alliance depends on its ability to forge a united front and overcome differences among various parties. The Congress party, which is seen as the main opposition party, has been reluctant to join a grand alliance, preferring to lead a coalition of smaller parties. However, the Congress has recently expressed its willingness to join forces with other opposition parties to take on the BJP.

The BJP, for its part, has dismissed the opposition’s efforts, calling them “opportunistic” and “anti-national.” The BJP’s leaders have also accused the opposition of trying to create chaos and instability in the country.

As the 2024 Lok Sabha elections draw closer, the political landscape in India is likely to become even more polarized. The success of the opposition alliance will depend on its ability to put aside differences and work together to present a strong and united front against the BJP.
