The 2016 US elections awoke the world to the fact that the technologies that citizens use to connect, engage, and inform can also be misused to undermine democracy. An immense amount of work has since gone into better guarding from foreign interference, domestic disinformation, and voter suppression, requiring new products, policies, and approaches from platforms, governments, and civil society alike. But as the 2020 US elections show, this intensive effort requires a lot of resources, attention, and coordination. In 2024, over thirty countries—including the United States, United Kingdom, India, Mexico, and Tunisia—will hold national elections. What can the community of researchers, activists, policymakers, and platform reps do now to ensure that hundreds of millions of people around the world are able to debate the direction of their countries and choose their leaders freely and fairly?
