Next Indian Elections

For millions of young Indians, turning 18 is supposed to mark the beginning of their right to vote. But a recent Election Commission change to Form 6 has raised questions about the hurdles first-time voters could face when registering.
In this episode of The Indian Express, Sayoni Aiyar looks at the Election Commission rift revealed by Ritika Chopra’s investigation, the objections raised by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, and the controversy over changes to Form 6.
The investigation found that a new declaration was added to the online Form 6 asking applicants whether their own name, or that of their parents or grandparents, appeared in the roll of the last Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
With more than 22 crore voters aged 18–29 in the 2024 Lok Sabha electorate, what could these changes mean for India’s first-time voters?
Watch the full video and read Ritika Chopra’s investigation for the details behind the Election Commission dispute.
