New national polling from Emerson College published today shows Pete Buttigieg holding a consistent 5-point lead over both JD Vance and Marco Rubio in hypothetical 2028 presidential matchups. According to the August 2026 Emerson College and The Hill survey, Buttigieg is the only Democratic candidate tested who maintains the same margin against both Republicans. The poll asked voters about matchups between Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio against the top five polling Democratic primary candidates, including Pete Buttigieg, Gavin Newsom, Jon Ossoff, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Kamala Harris. While November 2028 remains years away and no candidates have secured their party's nomination, the polling provides an early snapshot of potential general election dynamics. In five matchups against Democrats, Rubio outperformed Vance in all but one, with Buttigieg holding a 5-point edge against both Republicans.
