AfD Wins Thuringia Polls: First Victory for German Far-Right Since WW2 | Vantage with Palki Sharma
The far-right Alternative for Germany party, or AfD, has emerged as the largest party in the state of Thuringia. It's the first time that a far-right party has won elections in Germany since World War 2. The last German Far-Right party to win elections was the Nazi Party. The AfD has steadily been gaining popularity thanks to its anti-immigrant rhetoric. The AfD's anti-migration stance has won it support in eastern German states where economic opportunities have been limited. Did former Chancellor Angela Merkel's decision to allow over a million refugees into Germany in 2015 pave the way for the rise of the Far-Right? Will the current Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, be able to keep the AfD at bay during next year's general election?
